Composing Music for Films/Media
Recent Film Projects:
Matthew composed the music for Christina (2023) a romcom/horror film which premiered at the Mockingbird Cinema in the Custard Factory, Birmingham.
‘Mission Binder’ (2023), a short film centering around LGBTQ+ topics. The soundtrack drew inspiration from Adiescar Chase’s synthwave style soundtrack for Netflix’s ‘Heartstopper’.
Composing Music for Theme Parks & Resorts
Matthew grew up on the Shropshire/Staffs border, subsequently resulting in him spending a lot of time at Alton Towers & Drayton Manor Resorts, inspiring him to pursue Theme Park Music.
While studying Music Technology, Matthew decided to centre in on his passion for Theme Park Music and produce an academic piece of research into this specialist/niche, looking at how the music is composed for parks, who composes it, and the effect it has on the audience. All of this he published in a written academic piece of writing, titled, ‘The importance of Theme Park Music’ which he gained a distinction for.
Moreover, he has had the honour of interviewing the director of music and entertainment at Alton Towers / Merlin Entertainment, Simon Allen. The whole 45 minute long talk is available on Youtube.
He’s also composed his own Theme Park music, including for ZooLogical Park in Staffordshire, which requested an area audio loop of music for their entrance plaza, and has been given musical briefs from Alton Towers. In addition, he’s re-imagined popular theme park ride soundtracks with original re-scores, including ‘Soarin’ at Disney’s EPCOT.
Performing & Conducting
Matthew recently acquired his ABRSM grade 8 violin certificate and until June 2023, played violin in the Wolverhampton Symphony Orchestra and had the opportunity to conduct Schuberts ‘Symphony No. 8’, having orchestral conducting lessons at the CBSO Centre with Jack Lovell-Huckle and with tutors from Trinity Laban (Conservatoire of Music & Dance). Additionally, Matthew has played violin with the City of Birmingham Symphony Youth Orchestra, playing at Birmingham’s Symphony Hall under Michael Seal and Kazuki Yamada, the Hownslow Symphony Orchestra (HSO) and continues to play with the London Gay Symphony Orchestra (LGSO) which performs intense classical repertoire at the Barbican centre.
